Topics for Essay 3 go here. From Mike Lohre

Please post your best Essay Three idea here.  Explain what it is, and WHY you want to write about this topic.

Put your idea in the Comments section below, so we can see all the ideas for the class.

Also, I think Big Picture Questions like the ones I'm offering and the ones I'm asking you to think of on your own in response to the readings, are often a great gateway into an argument or analysis or problem/solution essay.

Also, if you have a great Big Picture Question related to our readings, let's post them here in the Comments as well, along with your essay topic.

Here's a few of mine to 'prime the pump'! (an idiom that means to get things started)

Big Picture questions:
Why do Americans constantly evoke the Founding Fathers, and for what purposes?
Who is your favorite American historical figure and what public documents or history do we most associate with him or her?
Why is the colonial war against Britain still relevant today? What values do we take from that fight?
What kinds of journalism are most important, and is true investigative journalism dying?  Why?
* What is the difference between a cynic and a skeptic?  Which one more describes you, and why?
* Where has the government shown a cynical distrust or disrespectful manner in dealing with its citizens?
* Where is the citizenry guilty of showing a cynical distrust or disrespect of government and its public servants?
* If the citizens have the right to change or throw off a corrupt government, how can we get that done peacefully and without violence?  Especially in a society that is armed to the teeth-- from the military to the police right down to many citizens?
*Is it legal for the President to start wars without approval of Congress?  What do the public documents say?
* Is Edward Snowden a hero for exposing the goverment's lies or a traitor for exposing its private information and secrets?  Might he be both?
* What's in the public document made by Congress called The Patriot Act and how does it protect us? Why do some people argue we gave up too many freedoms in that act and that the protection is not worth it or does not exist anyway?
*Why do so many people put off or refuse to make a living will or medical directive?

Thanks!

Mike Lohre

Brainstorming and sharing topics is a great way to see if the path we are on is correct, and it helps us help each other as well, as we do research, tweak our focus, and find sources.

  3. Capital punishment and the morality of the death penalty in America. This topic is something I harbor a very strong opinion on and has always held an interest in my mind.

  4. For option one I would right about either Choffey's, a little coffee shop or A Little Simplicity, a shop that sells all Ohio made products, both located in small downtown Delaware. For option 2 I would write a argumentative essay on why people should practice and support organic farming/farms over conventional. And for option 3 I would answer the interpretive question What are Tim O'Bien's main reasons for writing " The Things they Carried?"

    1. I think I am going to write the argumentative one because I am a strong supporter of organic farms and there is a lot of evidence to support my views.

  5. I am going to do an argumentative essay over the topic of free tuition to college students. Growing up my family didn't have the most money in the world but we also didn't struggle so college tuition was always a worry for us. We didn't know how much help we were going to get. But when I lost my mom I now get a lot of help form the government. It's sad that people have to spend the majority of their life paying back these loans. And to really get anywhere in this world you need a college degree. I just don't think it's fair to have college tuition set so high for something that is highly valued and needed in life to succeed.

  6. I am going to write an argumentative essay on whether or not collegiate athletes should be paid. I've always loved college football and this issue has became more popular throughout the last few years especially.

  7. For my essay, I am going with Option One: Hidden Gems and am going to write about the small record shop that we have in town called Endangered Species (a.k.a Pat's Records). I'm doing this place because of my love of music and the appreciation that I have for having a music shop within walking distance of my house. Pat, the guy who owns it is very knowledgeable about the music and provides insight to all of my questions. I feel like Delaware has so many local shops that deserve to be talked about!

  8. For Option 2 I will write a Problem Solution essay about spanking your children and the other other alternatives of reinforcement.

  9. I plan on talking about not being able to carry some form of protection on college campuses. i.e. Pocket knives, tazors, etc. This is option two on our paper.

  10. 1. I would like to write about the effects of war on soldiers, like PTSD.
    2. I would also like to write about if public universities should be free to attend.
    3. What does Kiowa represent, and mean to the company in the book.
I would prefer to write about the second option. I feel like this issue is hot right now and I could find many sources with conflicting viewpoints. I may also write about option one.

  11. For my essay I plan on doing the first one, hidden gems. The hidden gem I plan on discussing is Alum Creek Lake and State Park. I picked this place because one I love the outdoors and also with it being so close to where I live and going there ever since I was little it was where I began to fall in love with being on the water. I hope to let others see what I see in this lake/park when writing this essay.

  12. I've selected option two from our choices. I would like to write about Censorship & Democracy how the polar opposites might have some advantages. To take a side I support more of a Democracy than a censorship.

  13. I have chosen Option 2 for my Essay 3. I decided that I will be writing about Gun Rights (Pro) and why households should not be disarmed, in the case that they may need weapons to defend themselves from criminals in a horrifying scenario. I chose this topic after taking consideration of how the Second Amendment has been under fire recently by groups that are for gun control and has become a hot topic of debate.

  14. For Essay 3, I have decided to go with Option 1: Hidden Gems. The place I will be writing about is a small Diner called Smiling Daisy, located in a place near Marysville, called Milford Center.

  15. My hopes for Essay Three would be to explore the Marion Palace Theatre. I believe that the Palace is a small light in a sea of darkness. Marion definitely isn't the finest town to live in, so I want to explore all the great things the Palace does to give our community hope and positivity.

  16. For Essay three I have decided to go with the first option: Hidden Gems. I will write about a locally owned and run coffee shop that opened a couple of years ago in Upper Sandusky.

  17. For essay three I will write about Carlyles, a local restaurant in Richwood. It's on of the only restaurants in Richwood.

  18. I am going to do the Hidden Gem Essay. There's a cool Japanese restaurant that recently opened in Delaware. It's comparable to a Japanese Steak House setting. My biggest fear is that the restaurant might close due to slow business:(

  19. I was unsure of what to write about until I read Mike's suggestion of 'What kinds of journalism are most important, and is true investigative journalism dying? Why?" I want to write a argumentative essay on my opinion that investigative journalism is the most important form of media and it is dying today. I believe the United States media is heavily biased and many people are unaware of this.

  20. I will be writing my essay on a "hidden gem" called the Hamburger Inn, in Delaware.
