Comments for Jared and Lillie: Hurricane Katrina

For your comments on Presentations:

First, write about something well done.  What did you learn from this group?  What part of the Presentation seemed the best?  Be specific.

Second, offer constructive criticism that would help this group. What might have been more clear?  What part of the Presentation seemed the least polished?  Be specific.

Post all comments for this group below this post, please, as we all need feedback, and it's valuable.

  1. 1 I think that the Beijing Smog correlation was nicely put considering that we read about the smog in England that happened years ago. It tied the past into today's catastrophes. What I learned was that 25 percent of the United States chemical plants are located in Louisiana. That's a huge number for a small area.
2 For constructive criticism I would suggest "reading" your co-presenter a little more. Some of the transitions were a little slow because a signal wasn't sent or caught. Other than that, Well Done.

  2. 1. I thought you guys both did a really good job of explaining the subject. I also thought your powerpoint was really good the slides were easy to see and read also your pictures were great.
    2. The one thing I would say you all could have improved on would have been maybe to have practiced it a little more together, at times it felt choppy, but other than that, nice job.

  3. 1. I think you guys did a good job presenting the information and categorized it well. I didn't know it cost the government that much to help all these people. I also didn't know that people waited weeks to get off their roof.
    2. Something I think you guys could have worked on was you looked at your notes a lot. Also I think you guys maybe should have practiced it together a little more but other than that great job.

  4. 1. I thought you guys did a great job presenting the information, and I had never thought about hurricane victims suffering from PTSD which was very interesting. I had never thought about the long term effects before.
    2. The only thing I would critique would be the transitioning between presenters could have been smoother. Other than that, great job!

  5. 1. I learned a lot of different things. I did not know that the people had not known how strong the hurricane was going to be. I had not thought of victims suffering from PTSD either. I had never really thought about the cost of the hurricane economically and also how it impacted the environment.
    2. I would just suggest that next time you guys maybe practice a little more on transitioning. Other than that you two did great.

  6. 1. There was so much information that I didn't know prior to your presentation. The chosen facts were perfect and interesting. I liked how you stayed away from the more common and less interesting facts about Katrina.
    2. Just practice more and get to know your co-presenter more. The chemistry wasn't there which affected transition and smoothness.

  7. 1.) You guys did a great job diving in and explaining what kind of damage occurred because of this tragedy. I never would have thought that someone could experience PTSD because of a natural disaster, especially children.
2.) I think one thing that may have been able to make your presentation a little bit more meaningful is if you discussed the events leading up to the flood.

  8. I think your presentation was very informative, which I liked, it had lots of facts and satisfies that were relabel the. I thought it was interesting that people had ptsd after the storm and I would like to actually learn more about that.
One thing I think you could have done though, is make it a little less fact based and maybe instead made the presentation more touching, so the viewers could have felt or imagined what the people involved felt, that would have really helped it all come together as to why the hurricane is an iconic event.

  9. 1. Good job guys! You guys did well on presenting the repercussions of this tragedy. The Salt water intrusion was one of my favorite facts you guys pointed out because it goes over your mind on how even something as minute as saltwater intrusion can have huge implications on animal life that pertains to fresh water.
    2. Transitioning could improve, but other than that, really informative and well done.

  10. 1) I really like that you had a lot of facts on Hurricane Katrina, like how much damage the USA took on an economical viewpoint. I didn't realize how badly the chemical industry were after the Hurricane.
    2) One thing that wasn't very clear was the effects it had on society after the event. Also, one thing I would recommend doing is to not look at your flash cards too much.

  11. 1. I think that you had a strong presentation, you guys knew your facts really well. You made eye contact and moved around.
    2. Maybe you could have added what we are still doing today to help Katrina victims.

  12. 1) Hurricane Katrina was one of the most detrimental events in U.S. history, and you guys really emphasized just how horrific it was. I had always known that it was a terrible event, but I learned many new things that I hadn't before, such as that not all of the deaths were confirmed or that 90,000 square miles were affected. I remember Katrina happening, and I was young, so it's crazy to think that people are STILL affected everyday by this tragedy.
    2) One thing that I thought could've been improved is the smoothness of each transition. But overall, I think you guys did a great job!

  13. One thing I really hadn't thought about before was the effects of PTSD on the children who went through this catastrophe. I like that you highlighted facts like this, as they offer a different but important thought for how tragic the hurricane was.

One thing I noticed was that many of the notes given by the presenters were read off of slides or note cards. Other than practicing a little more, you guys did a great job.

  14. One thing your group really struck gold with was in the way you presented your information to the class, you were both obviously comfortable presenting and were relaxed as you talked. This is a relief to see and is much easier to sit through a presentation when the presenters appear comfortable, it makes everyone watching feel more at ease.
A very small bit of criticism that I have to offer would be to talk more in depth about the erosion issue, you only briefly touched on this.

  15. 1. Something that was well done about this presentation is the wide variety of topics that you guys have covered that was affected from Hurricane Katrina from PTSD to the amount of land that was touched by the hurricane. It broadened my view of how destructive this was to the nation. One thing that I learned about was how much this one devastating storm costed the country. I had no idea the damage would end up costing 96-125 billion dollars for treating and rebuilding the southern states.
    2. The biggest issue of the presentation was how you guys relied on the slides and notecards while you were speaking, there needed to be more preparation as well as eye contact with the audience for your speech.

  16. One of the things i learned from this presentation is that victims of Katrina actually suffered from PTSD. The best part of this essay was all of the information provided and the analysis of the effect on victims including the children.

The biggest issue i had with this presentation was noticing that the presenters were heavily reliant on the slides and notecards which detracts from the audiences attention.

  17. 1.) I thought that your guys presentation was very informational and well put together. I learned exactly how tragic this event was. I didn't realize how greatly the wildlife was affected.
2.) The only criticism that I have was how heavily the presenters relied on the slides and notecards, it distracted from the entire point.

  18. I enjoyed your comparison to Beijing and what they are going through right now with how they can't even do their everyday tasks right now. I noticed the costs were kind of repeated between the two presenters and they should have got that cleared up.
