Dixon Shapiro - Exploration 3

Dixon Shapiro
Exploration 3

Very recently, I started my job as a Student Employee for the basic Engineering classes. Part of my job is to grade the students' papers. I was in a rush to grade them and post them online because I was also busy with my other part-time job and my homework. When I started grading these papers, I was very nervous about giving the proper grades and finishing on time, so much so that I was debating whether or not to stop and ask my employer to help me and/or give me more time. After a while, I started to increase my speed in grading and my nervousness decreased. I then realized that one of the most important things in life is that you can't stop halfway; you must finish what you started and said you would complete. I also learned that with time, almost anything will become much easier to do.

One type of issues are issues of evaluation. This type of issue are mostly yes or no questions, and is usually based on moral or personal reasoning, and not so much on logical reasoning. For example, one might ask which mobile products, Apple or Android, best suits one preference in user interfaces. Another example is if what kind of improvements should the new X-box gaming system get. These questions can be argued with personal reasoning more so that logical reasoning.

An issue that is important to me as a young citizen is if the government should increase minimum wage, or keep it as it is. This is very important to me because I have two part-time jobs, and my wages are hourly based. With my job as a Bus-Boy, I am getting very close to minimum wage, so it concerns me at the moment what the government is doing to the minimum wage value. Some people would like the wage to increase so that people will have more spending money, which will then give corporations more money to improve their products. It will also assist in increasing the wages and bonuses of their workers. This will create a cycle that will increase the happiness of the consumers, and the overall quality of products. However, some people don't want an increase in the wage because they believe that if wages keep increasing, inflation will also increase, making the economy even worse than it is at the moment. These people also think that in the worse-case scenario, if the wages keep increasing for a certain amount of time, the whole economy could crash. My stance in this issue is to increase minimum wage. This is mostly because I make minimum wage, but I also believe that if workers had better wages, the overall productivity of corporations and their workers would increase.

Great benefits with an increased minimum wage

  1. I think that inflation can be minimized if minimum wage is raised only slightly or kept the same. The problem is that if minimum wage is raised too high, all the goods and services in the market increase in price.

  2. Minimum wage is something that definitely needs fixed here in the United States. I see and hear about many people who feel like they absolutely have to get more than one job because minimum wage does not cut it. I believe the minimum wage should be raised, however, I am unaware of the negative side effects of doing so.
