Fresh Response: Exploration 4 Amanda Chirico

One of the most important ideas that I took away from the movie Fresh was the part when someone said “cheaper (meaning food) isn’t always cheaper you still pay for it in some way, if that’s your health playing for it or the environment taking it your still paying for it in someway its just not right up front. It also surprised me when one guy I think his name was Russ Cramer said he saved 14,000 dollars in one year by cutting antibiotics all together on his pigs. If I was going to review this movie I would focus most on what are the industries that have kind of taken over and I would look at the real numbers comparing industrial farms to non-industrial farms. I think the movie does a great job giving a lot of facts and good information on farming they have a lot of really good sources but I feel it was all a little one sided when giving its facts and information. I really can’t relate much to the movie in that I never grew up on or around farms but when I go grocery shopping at Kroger’s there produce section always sells locally grown and harvested fruits and vegetables so I try and buy as many of those knowing that they are better for you and to support the local business.

The question I looked up was do pigs sweat? I never really thought about that question till I watched this movie. The information I found was surprising it said that Pigs do have a few sweat glands, but they're not very useful for temperature adjustment. When the temperature rises on the farm, pigs tend to cool off in cool water or mud, which has the same evaporation effect as sweating.

  1. I really liked the quote that you used. It is very similar to the saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch." I have always thought that it is a great way to explain the concepts of society and science in just one simple phrase. It also corresponds to modern society; since social media has been improving and has gotten more popular, and that society thinks that it is cheaper and faster, we "pay" for it with our socialization skills.

  2. I was also surprised by how much money was saved when he got rid of antibiotic. I never really knew how much of an impact of the livestock being treated affected them until I watched this movie.

  3. I think that the quote you used is such a powerful statement. I think that a majority of the people in this world today are so concerned with staying within their budget that they want the cheapest products they can possibly find. This movie did such a great job proving that cheaper isn't always better. We may not be paying in dollar amount, but we most certainly are paying in several different other ways.
