One of the most important ideas was inconvenience for Americans. They talked about how everything is convenient now. You don't have to worry about getting something because its practically at your fingertips. The more you process food, the less nutrious it is. Some people don't have access to healthy food if they live in big cities especially, so fast food is all over. They made the statement, "You get what you pay for with food.". If you pay for cheap food, then its going to be lower quality, and have a lot less nutrients than healthy food.
My question is, If we made sure there was access to healthy food, would people eat it? It seems people like fast food, because its convenient, easy, and it tastes good. Those are all things people want, but our bodies won't like us for it in the end.
I agree with what you said. I think that Americans are so used to everything being handed to them, they aren't actually willing to put in their full effort. A lot of people use growth hormones because they can get animals bigger quicker, without having to work as hard as you would with a normal growing animal. That's why people like fast food, because it's usually cheaper, and instead of cooking, they can simply drive their car through a line and pick up whatever food they want.
ReplyDeleteI feel that you asked a very important question in your second paragraph. Yes fast food is convenient, easy, and tastes good, but I feel that if more people are educated on what is actually in their "fast food" then they would at least try to eat healthier even if it could be a bit inconvenient at times. For example: the upper safe limit of sodium intake (not the recommended, anything past this is point is considered unsafe) is 2,300 milligrams but the average daily intake for Americans is 3,400 milligrams. The second most popular item at McDonalds is the Bic Mac with the most popular item being French Fries. So if you were to consume a Large Big Mac meal, you would be consuming 1,260 milligrams of sodium in one setting. That is more than half of the safe limit that a person should consume per day. Consuming too much sodium can effect your kidneys, heart, bones, and stomach. So in order to get people to start making healthier decisions, I feel that not only does there need to be easy access to healthier foods, you also have to educate others on what they are really putting into their in order for them to make healthier decisions.
ReplyDeleteYour question in the second paragraph made me also think if people would eat it. I believe that if healthy food was just as easy to get as fast food, but still more expensive, that people would continue to choose fast.
