My name is Joe Weingates, this is my first time blogging and first year in college. I plan on majoring in Computer science and engineering at the moment. I graduated from Marysville High School and currently commute from there (roughly 45 minutes away). I ran track all through high school except for my senior year when i had stress fractures in both my legs. I plan on transferring to the main campus after this year at Marion.
In "The Life of Frederick Douglass" What stood out to me was Mr. Auld's accusations of what would happen if Frederick could read. He said if Frederick learned to read it was basically make him worth nothing but in my opinion i'd think it'd make him more valuable since he could do things like teach the owner's children to read and things along that line. But what his master said to him did motivate him to learn to read so i guess all works out in that sense. I learned that literacy events basically occur everyday in our lives, anything we look at whether it is only a grocery list or a tweet. the literacy event in the selection from "The life of Frederick Douglass" was Mrs. Auld Was teaching Frederick to spell words.
I was also really surprised by his reaction to Douglass learning to read. It's crazy to think that anyone could ever view education as harmful.
ReplyDeleteI think that the reason Mr. Auld didn't want Douglass to learn how to read was so that he could control him easier.
