In chapter one, one piece of writing that really stood out to me was the piece by Frederick Douglas. In the narrative, it talks about how back then, black people were not supposed to be taught. The only way Douglas was going to be able to learn anything would be own his own. This put more of a value on the education. Douglas wanted to learn and be educated, even though slaves were not supposed to be educated, After Mr. Auld said that a slave should never be taught, it really motivated Douglas. It gave him a new perspective on education. Writing and Reading were just as important back then as they are now. They help you communicate in everyday life, and are essential.
