Exploration 3 - Bianca

A literacy event that taught me something valuable would be learning to drive. Once I got my license I had much more freedom than I had ever had before, and with this freedom I had a lot more responsibility. I had to learn to become more independent, and had to learn to budget my time.

"Issues of evaluation are questions about whether something is good or bad, right or wrong, desirable or undesirable, effective or ineffective, valuable or worthless"(The Call to Write, pg. 58). We are faced with these questions day to day, and often have trouble coming up with a clear answer.

As a young citizen, an issue that I find important is abortion.  This issue has two sides to it: pro-choice and pro-life. Personally I am pro-choice, I feel that it is the woman's choice whether or not she wants to continue her pregnancy. But I also think there should be limits. I feel that late term abortions should not be legal except in the case that the woman's health or life is in danger. Another reason I am pro-choice is because by keeping abortions legal, it is keeping women safer. If abortion becomes illegal, abortions won't stop, safe abortions will stop. Without the option of a safe, legal abortion, women will feel trapped turn to what they call "back-alley" abortion. These unsafe procedures are performed by inexperienced individuals who use very dangerous methods. Unsafe abortion is the cause of 68,000 deaths a year in the U.S. and is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality.

  1. I absolutely agree with your argument on abortion and what the outcome of making it illegal will be! Personally, I had in mind that it was a big deal but the statistic you provided really brought out the importance to me. Can you think of any other regulations there could be on abortion to make both sides compromise?

  2. I enjoyed reading your opinion on the abortion topic as you brought a new light to the subject for me, you discussed mainly the woman's life and health and argued that we should not singularly focus on the unborn but also the real mothers of these kids who are at stake. I think that if more people heard your argument for pro choice it would do a lot to change their minds on the subject and possibly even sway their opinion.
