Hello, my name is Andrea Carwile and I am currently a senior at Harding High School. Outside of class, I am actively involved in the music department. A majority of my free time is devoted to marching band, however when I can find time to myself I enjoy anything that involves art supplies. In the past I have crocheted, scrapbooked, made greeting cards, and painted. I am here at OSUM because I am unsure of what I may want to do after school, so I am taking advantage of the free classes and trying to figure out what may be a reasonable career option for me. I am currently considering studying business in hopes that one day I can open my own crafting business.
In Eudora Welty's One Writer's Beginnings, the fact that Eudora had such a huge excitement for reading really stood out to me. The chapter clearly stated that a literacy event allows people to evaluate how both reading and writing shapes their lives in a social aspect. This literacy event shaped her in such a way that she was able to continue on to be an award winning author of great stories that brought great joy others. I think that the pure happiness that was brought to Eudora through reading her books has decreased significantly in recent years because of the increasing use of social media and technology. As a result of that, children are being exposed to literacy events in different ways and they shaping their lives in a completely different way than they way Eudora's generation was shaped.
When reading that article her excitement also stood out to me. The fact that she was willing to go to the library even though she had heard that the librarian was mean really to me showed her dedication.
ReplyDeleteI felt that Eudora's excitement was something very similar to what I had when I was a child. I would always ride my bike to the library to read new books. Nowadays, I am usually on my Tablet reading online copies, which is very similar to what you said about social media and technology decreasing the happiness in reading a book. By the way, what instrument do you play, and are you also in choir/show choir?
ReplyDeleteI like how you stated reading and writing shapes lives in a social way, I absolutely agree. As many don't consider this, where exactly would we be today without the knowledge to read and write? It's so essential to our communication, and we don't even consider that. It means a lot more to read and enjoy hard copies of books and communicate in other ways than social media, because our society is becoming dependent on it. Also, I love anything that has to do with art supplies as well! I primarily just paint, what do you find yourself liking the most artistically?
