Exploration Two- Devon Beck

Hello, my name is Devon. I'm eighteen and a freshmen.  I've lived in Marion for pretty much my entire life except when I was like two. We lived on a military base in North Carolina while my dad served as a marine. They got divorced many years ago.   I graduated from Harding in 2015. I have a cleft lip and palate but I got lucky because mine is not nearly as bad as most.  A lot of people have to have numerous surgeries before they look somewhat alright.

This is a photo I took on freshmen orientation with two of my best friends who also attended Harding.

The passage " From Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas" stood out to me. A huge theme to me was education. If you show a person that is more to life then what they know they will want to know more. If you don't know how to read you can be pretty much forced to do anything without even knowing. Fredrick Douglas had to secretly get an education. His master did not want him to get an education. He did not want to lose his slave so he didn't want him to get smart. I got the sense that education was power. If you gave someone an education then they would have power.

  1. I bet living in Marion and commuting to Osu marion is super convenient! I live in Delaware (about 30 minutes away), and my gas tank hates me.
