Exploration 2: Amber McLaughlin

Hi, my name is Amber McLaughlin. I am 20 years old and I graduated from Upper Sandusky high school in 2013 but I now live in Delaware. This is my second year at OSUM and I love it but I hope to transfer to main campus next semester just so I can get the college experience and get to see what college outside of commuting is about. I am a radiology major and I hope to someday be a doctor.  I also have been to Hawaii twice and it was the greatest experience of my life. I loved it there. It has some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. I would definitely recommend anyone to go there and experience it for themselves. I loved sports in high school and I would still like to do some on the side but I feel like I won't have enough time with my studies.

In the first chapter of the reading what stood out to me most was the Fredrick Douglas excerpt. It showed me that life was really hard back then, and I knew that already but it just gave me a different perception on it. I couldn't imagine being colored person in those days and I think the way they were treated was uncalled for. They never felt a tiny bit of shame for what they were doing to these other humans and I'll never understand why. I also learned that there are many different ways to write and some of those ways are more obvious and more used everyday than we would think. The most interesting to me was the making lists category. I never thought of it that way, I just thought of it as a simple way to remember things that need to be done. Also writing in the public sphere was pretty interesting as well.

  1. I completely agree with you when you say that the way slaves were treated was uncalled for. I think that because we live in a society where skin color is often overlooked, it is harder for us to understand why they were treated in such a way, so once again I agree with you when you say that you will never understand why slave owners were okay with treating humans in such a brutal way.
