Exploration Three: Allison Clark

Literacy Events and Opposing Issues

A literacy event that has taught me something important, that I use in my life everyday was losing my dad when I was 13 years old. Although this time was tough for me, I always  knew that he would never just want me to give up on all my goals because I was feeling down or in a tough place in my life. I figured out at quite an early age the importance of perseverance and looking within yourself for your strength to keep pushing on, this applied to me in so many areas. In school, this lesson kept me moving, and set me up to keep on track to graduating high school and starting college at Ohio State like I had always wanted to. Most importantly, it's given be faith in myself to handle whatever curve balls that life has thrown at me.

Issues of Policy: These issues are the types that need to be discussed, and spark conversation. It raises a question of what should be done in the situation occurring. In reference to analyzing an event, policy takes part in discussion, what the public thinks should happen and how political figures can make that happen or a close compromise. There are many issues that are in discussion now such as the legalization of marijuana and abortion.

As a young citizen, a topic that I find that my opinion interest is the argument of pro life vs. pro choice. Personally, I find myself right in the middle politically and this is where I wish that our government was, not too far left or too far right, and finding compromise where it is needed. In the abortion arguments, both are so vastly different and on opposite sides of the spectrum, and that's why it is such a hardball topic. Personally, I am Pro Choice, for it's a woman's body and she should freely do what she wants with it. But as I have those views, I have even stronger views with the concept of compromise. As I believe that a woman should have the choice, I also think that there should be stipulations and regulations on so. For example, there should on be certain circumstances when the option should be available, either if its rape/incest or the pregnancy is harmful to the woman's life. I also believe that this should have a regulation on how many one person should have, for after 1-2, a lesson is learned where the pregnancy can be prevented. I take my views because I value both life, and freedom that citizens are granted. After all, the only thing making it illegal would do is prevent women from having safe abortions, otherwise they will find a more dangerous method to do so, just the same as alcohol is illegal to minors, but they still find ways to do it (in very irresponsible ways). Another reason being that I do not think that religion should interfere with law at all, they are two separate entities, and should stay that way. Since abortion arguments are so religiously inclined, I believe that it should be disregarded in debate because with a country as diverse as the United States, one single religion is not the law of the land and shouldn't be considered as so.

  1. Alli-- I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. I can't imagine the things you have learned as a result and I know a lot of it had to be really hard. Thanks for the thoughtfulness and consideration you put into your writing and to talking and sharing about difficult issues and choices. I'm impressed with the way you all are writing with consideration and depth. That"s a very hopeful thing!
