Exploration Three: Literacy events and opposing issues

1) Not long ago, I injured my right shoulder while lifting weights. This injury prevented me from doing any action above my head with my right arm. I could write and eat using my right arm, but I couldn't do much aside from that. Over a short period of time, I had to do most everything with my left arm. Before the injury, my left hand was nearly useless. The only thing I could do with my left hand was dribble a basketball. As a result, I had to learn how to integrate my left hand in to my daily life. I had to shower using my left hand, brush my teeth with my left hand, and even shoot a basketball with my left hand. To improve coordination, I spent hours shooting with my left hand. I kept shooting until I was efficient with my left hand. This injury has improved the coordination in my left hand, which I see as a valuable asset.

2) Issues of evaluation are questions that have to deal with what is right or wrong, such as moral questions, and what is good and bad, ineffective or effective, or desirable or undesirable. I ask myself moral questions all of the time. I know I could do something that is wrong and get away with it, but morally I can't do it.

3) The tuition cost of public universities. This issue is important to me because I am obviously in college and it costs a lot of money to attend. I understand why the education shouldn't be free, but almost $11,000 for tuition and $11,000 for room and board is steep in my opinion. Universities make a massive amount of money every year outside of tuition money and room and board. I know that everything is a business, but universities overcharge everything. I think it would be fair if costs were cut at public universities to a point where they are still making money off the students, but not to the point where some people can't go to college because it's expensive, which is currently the case with some people today.

  1. I will agree with you that everything is over priced. Perhaps there are hidden costs of operation that we don't see? I think it would be nice if a full disclosure of the expenditures were public information. I'd like to know where the money is being spend as well. I do have a few questions: Which University were you looking at with the both the tuition and board both being 11,000? I'm sure there are other universities that cost more as well as less. Have you looked into scholarships to help save you money? And my final question: What percent above the outgoing costs of the university would be acceptable to you?

  2. I agree with you on the fact that college is very expensive and is you bring up a good point when saying college should not be free but 11000 dollars for room and board is really ridiculous. I agree they need to make money but they can that without charging you a ridiculous amount of money.
